Philip Yochum - Teacher,
Administrator, and Board Member

Philip Yochum was born in Australia and raised in Colorado. He began his rhythmic journey through dance by studying tap/jazz, ballet, and west coast swing. These forms of dancing took him to Los Angeles, where he competed on a national level. He studied drumset throughout high school with session drummer Dennis Holt, and upon graduation, Phil moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial Percussion. There, he was exposed to the full spectrum of commercial and classical music under the instruction of Brian Fullen, Chester Thompson, Todd London, Dr. Chris Norton, and Derico Watson. Drumming for Belmont's Show Choir, Rock Ensemble, and Jazz String Septet pushed Phil to master all genres of music. His drum career has spanned over two decades and has included tours, recording sessions, private drum instruction, as well as group classes.

For over 15 years, Philip has had the privilege of working with all ages and skill levels of students, as well as special needs children, to incorporate rhythm and motion, allowing them to bypass their verbal/social challenges and express themselves freely through music. He also has served as a substitute teacher in the Nashville School system for over a decade and continues to do so, impacting children as they learn and grow into
adulthood.

Philip’s involvement with Love Learning Music began as a drum instructor in 2018, and has grown into roles such as Program Director for afterschool music programs, as well as being a sitting board member for Love Learning Music.
